My obsession with the stranger side of London history has led me here to Brixton. Over the last few years I’ve been working with Chris Roberts from London Street Tours. I’ve had the opportunity to deliver and co-script unique interactive street walking tours of London. (What I love about his tours is that they mix frankly-bizarre-but-true facts with outrageous lies and challenge the participants to tell which is which. Those who guess right get a prize and the losers have to perform ridiculous forfeits.)
This has been an amazing opportunity for me to discover more about the city I love. Thanks to Chris, I now know all about London’s “female barkers”, the “brown dog riots”, Christopher Wren’s cunning money-making schemes and much more.
Anyway here’s a few weird highlights of a specially commissioned tour which I led for LST in Brixton. (cont.)
It was commissioned by Oval House Theatre -who are opening a new theatre in Brixton in 2017- for their #BrixtonCity festival. All these beautiful pictures are by Rosie Powell Freelance www.rosiepowellfreelance.com
The background below shows the stunning Nuclear Dawn Mural commissioned by Lambeth Council in 1981 as a response to the Brixton riots. (Peckham got a giant peace wall after the 2011 riots. Brixton got a vast image of death stalking the city, but whatever.) There are many 80s murals surviving in London, i often post them on my IG feed.
We found out out about Brixton’s forgotten theatrical past. Have you heard the story about Former PM John Major’s father, the Music Hall performer Tom Major? The story goes that a young David Bowie spotted his name on a poster and liked it so much that he decided to name the famous character from Space Oddity after him.
(not everyone believes this one but I like to!)
We discovered why the Barrier Block Estate has such small windows. Did you know that it was designed to face onto a giant motorway which was planned to run down Coldharbour Lane?
(below) we had to stop and have a look at this!
if you want to book or commission a Liars Tour, please speak initially to Chris [email protected] or ask me and I will put you in touch with him!
