Spoken-word storytelling (also known as “oral storytelling”) is one of the best ways to help your little one enjoy language. It’s also a magical shared experience. Storytelling for small people is usually relaxed with lots of sensory participation and music.
A few years ago, I was asked to create under-threes storytelling sessions for for Time Out in The London Eye.
Doing these surprisingly-popular events made me wonder what other storytelling provisions there are for tiny Londoners… so I asked around and did my research and created this post which I update every year. Let me know if there’s anything new I should be including.
(Kew) A less-than-obvious venue… but their “time travel tots” has musical and sensory tales for all the family and the entire archive is wonderfully intriguing!
(Westminster) One of my favourite storytellers in the world, Olivia Armstrong, can often be found storytelling here! Check upcoming dates here.
(Wimbledon) This little theatre is a champion of traditional storytelling. As well as interactive storytelling-themed events, they run regular Friday Stories with various well known and fantastic professional tellers from around the world.
(SE1) Many storytelling and story-themed events for under-fives, often with a large musical component. During their regular Imagine Festival in February they shift into full-storytelling gear with a diverse collection of tellers, authors and events. Keep your eyes on this page here.
(Dulwich) Absolutely loads of storytelling! Much of it run by our friend Rosie Tells Tales. More here.
7) Your local bookshop
(London-Wide) Check out London’s independent Children’s Bookshops for regular storytimes, storytellings, workshops and one off author visits. We especially like Round Table Books, Aligator’s Mouth, The Childrens Book Shop, Pickled Pepper Books, AllGood Bookshop and Chicken and Frog (which is just outside London in Essex.)
8) )The Royal Parks
(various, London) Storytelling is often included in roadshows popping up in different Royal Parks during the holidays. There is also storytelling as part of Hyde Park’s Discovery Days which happen three days a week, every school holiday.
9) London’s local libraries
(Local to you) Check out your local borough library. Many have a rhyme time story and singing session run by the librarian and many have a much wider storytelling programme too. There are often storytelling events there as part of special celebrations like the Summer Reading Challenge and Black History Month and they are very often FREE!
9) Discover Childrens Story Centre
(Stratford) Colourful, friendly and professional sessions generally based on or inspired by books… Often run by Discover’s own “story-builders”. They also host book-themed birthday parties. Loads of sessions for 0-3s and 2-5s! Check out their calendar here.
(Across London and beyond) Magical, musical interactive stories for tiny people in some of the most beautiful spaces in London… (didn’t think I’d leave this out did you!?) We have loads of storytelling events for tiny ones. Have a look on our calendar to see what’s coming up. We also do interactive storytelling for baby-birthday parties and special events!
